Welcome to Governors' News Print

Welcome to this section of the school website. The School Governors now have their own part of the wesite and hope to use this to talk directly to parents and carers of children who are at the school. We aim to use it to inform those who are interested, exactly what has recently taken place from a governors perspective.

A Governing Body can have anything between 9 and 20 appointed governors, representing the Local Education Authority (LEA), the local Community, Parents, and School Staff including the Head Teacher.  At the moment we would dearly love more parents to join us in this role of overseeing the delivery of 'good' education for the children.

The role of a governor is to be a critical friend, to support and challenge the school to do better. We are here to question proposals and seek additional information in order to assist the leadership team to make sound decisions regarding the holistic education of the children. This includes not just the academic aspects that should be provided for all pupils but also the additional curriculum of sports, music, drama, and spirit of inquiry that enriches any school life. The school's 'Core Values' develops the educational, social and emotional skills of all attendees in such a manner that aids their growth into caring and thoughtful  youngsters. This will later support their transition into the responsibilities of adulthood. At Hulbert we are very proud that the school has an innovative approach to teaching and learning, and that it believes wholeheartedly that its 'philosophy of learning' is more imaginative than most, and hence it is a leader in its field!

The governing body should also have a strategic role ie set aims and objectives for the school, and associated targets relating to how the aims and objectives should be achieved. The governors themselves should then monitor and evaluate the school's progress towards its own improvement plan. This may mean visiting the school during the day in order to see for themselves the quality of the pupils work, observe how a class is conducted, or to talk to staff directly to find out their views on 'workload' or 'pupil behaviour' etc.

This can be so interesting and worthwhile that if you fancy joining us, please intially contact me, Angela Jones, Chair of Governors on 023 9225 1678, or Kim Simmons from the School Office and/or Mr Gerry Lathem, the Head Teacher. We would love to hear from you, even if it is only to chat about whether you have the time to devote to such a commitment. We realise that everyone is so busy that it is not always easy to fit in extra activites but if you would like to find out more, please do talk to us about the practicalities of being a school governor!
